Office
of the Sheriff |
Thank you for your interest indicating your desire to work in the Sheriff's Office.
Please be advised that you must take the Civil Service test given by the Department of Personnel in order to be hired as a sheriff's officer.
When an opening occurs, this hiring agency calls for a "list" from the "Department of Personnel. The names of 25 to 50 of the highest-ranked applicants are then forwarded to the hiring agency, while notices are simultaneously sent to the applicants advising them to respond within 10 days if still interested. The agency must then hire from those responding with an absolute minimum degree of discretion. Be advised that veterans get first preference regardless of score. Information on how to be included on the "list" can be obtained by calling the Department of Personnel (609) 292-8668.
If this agency calls for a list and you are among the highest ranked applicants, rest assured that we will give you full consideration within the narrow parameters of discretion allowed to us.
On another note, there are some law enforcement agencies that are not bound by the Civil Service guidelines mandated by the New Jersey Department of Personnel, like the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and some municipal police departments throughout the region. You may also want to consider applying to those agencies in the meantime.
Thank you for your interest. Best wishes for success in the field of law enforcement.
Sincerely,
Charles H. Billingham
Sheriff
