Camden County Freeholders Honor Ten Great Coaches Among Other Sports Legends
For Immediate Release: October 29, 2009
Contacts: KEN SHUTTLEWORTH
WHAT:
Ten of this year’s 14 inductees into the five-year-old Camden
County Sports Hall of Fame are well-known coaches. Several women
will be honored, including Maryanna Watson Barr, considered the
greatest scorer in the history of field hockey while at Gloucester
High School from 1959 to 1962.
Additionally,
54 old timers will be honored as Legends. For the most part, the
Legends played in the first half of the 20th Century and are now
deceased. Typical of the Legends is the late Fred Heimach, who signed
a major league contract at the age of 20 to pitch for Connie Mack’s
Philadelphia Athletics (now the Oakland A’s). Heimach joined
the starting rotation in 1922, then moved onto Boston in 1926, then
to the Yankees in 1928 and helped them win a world championship
as a reliever. He frequently visited his home in Camden’s
Cramer Hill section, stopping at his father’s pool hall accompanied
by Babe Ruth and other teammates.
